FALL 2014

INSPIRATION

In the beginning of the film Piccadilly (1929), Anna May Wong appears dressed in a beret, black-and-white striped sweater, and mini skirt. She looked exactly the way Mary Quant did on the day I met her! This led me to think a lot about Anna May Wong, and new ways to MOD-ernize her!

This season I'm inspired by Serge Luten's photographs for Shiseido, fashion illustrations from La Gazette du Bon Ton, Biba, art deco jewelry, the interiors of Rose Cummings, and chinoiserie rooms and pavilions from European palaces. I'm mad about the colors of jade, cinnebar and kingfisher blue.

In front of my Merrie Melodies cartoon deco backdrop…I'm featuring ruby red striped Mongolian fur coats, antique leopard capes, knit teal fox shrugs, satin chrysanthemum robes, smocked faille parkas, shimmering camouflage jackets, unconstructed tweedy suits as soft as sweaters, kimono-shaped art deco knits, digital print chinoiserie jumpsuits, burn-out velvet lamé pajamas, vintage peacock embroidery pants, Jimmy Page dragon beaded bell-bottoms, charmeuse tap shorts, black diamond lace flapper dresses, embroidered velvet cheongsams, and fairytale castle jacquard shifts.

I'm styling the show with patchwork sunburst Victorian boots, cat eye sunglasses, panne velvet sneakers, phoenix pendants with enormous tassels, pagoda beaded satin maryjanes with sporty rubber soles, slinky ombre fringe scarves, yarn braid Anna May Wong caps, gold snakeskin heeled oxfords, and a rhinestone dragon fox boa.
