| ANNA SUI FALL 2008 |
|
As if from some opulent fairy tale, I based my fall color palette on the shades you find in pre-Raphaelite paintings. I'm using all the iridescent peacock hues in vibrant ombres: ultramarine, periwinkle, cobalt, cyan, purple, heliotrope, amethyst, teal.

| ANNA SUI SPRING 2008
|
|
|
I love the 'rehearsal clothes' worn by the chorus girls in the backstage scenes from Busy Berkeley musicals. The look for Spring 2008 is all about 1930's and 40's Hollywood glamour as filtered through the nostalgic sensibility of 1970's glam. My muses for the season are super groupies Sable Starr and Cyrinda Foxe, and Warhol superstars Jane Forth and Donna Jordan. I love Jean Harlow movies, Guy Bourdin photographs and Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band.

| ANNA SUI SPRING 2007
|
|
|
I like the idea of the outwardly traditional with an undercurrent of
subversion. My Spring 2007 collection is about eighteenth century style
updated with a punk attitude, like a Watteau dress covered with silver
zippers…Glitter-Rock Marie Antoinette Swashbuckler.
My color scheme is based on the essential glam-rock combo of black, white
and red; but also includes, navy, kelly, violet, juniper, blueberry, aqua,
orchid, platinum and gold.

| ANNA SUI FALL 2006
|
|
|
For Fall 2006, Anna Sui is thinking about Dandies…Savile Row, Beau Brummer. Hussar Uniforms, Marching Bands, HMS Pinafore, Haberdashery. The look is schoolgirl done up in romantic menswear details…
The menswear theme can be seen in the fabrics…giant foulards, windowpane plaids, checkerboard burnouts, railroad stripes, embossed mohair, chunky herringbones, metallic houndstooth, appliquéd Donegal tweeds, abstract paisleys.
The shapes included pea coats, trenches, duffels, Hussar jackets, ruffle-front blouses, smocks, gypsy vests, knickers, tailored shorts, dirndls, jumpers, shirtwaists, apron dresses, hostess dresses and tablecloth dresses.
Anna Sui is in her Blue Period. Anna's Fall 2006 collection is all about the color Blue…midnight, indigo, navy and sapphire. In the bluish side of the color spectrum; there is also mauve, plum, lavender, winterberry and teal.

| ANNA SUI SPRING 2006
|
|
|
For Spring 2006, I was looking at reproductions of the French fashion magazine, “Gazette du Bon Ton” (1912-1925). I was excited by the vivid, saturated hand-painted colors. I loved the candy box quality. I was also greatly inspired by an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, “Matisse, The Fabric of Dreams: His Art and His Textiles.”

| ANNA SUI FALL 2005
|
|
|
Anna Sui wanted the girls in her Fall 2005 Fashion Show to look like they were going to the opening of a Louise Nevelson (1900-1988) exhibition. You can see Nevelson’s sartorial influence in the way she styled the collection; Anna always admired her eccentric way of dressing. This season, Anna was inspired by the work and style of that 20th century icon of modern art.
Anna was also looking at mid-century domestic interiors, especially the work of ultra cool David Hicks (1928-1966). You can see his influence in the patterns and colors of the textiles, the rugs and the wallpapers used in his interior design.

| ANNA SUI SPRING 2005 |
|
Anna Sui Spring 2005
“To coincide with all the current interest in Victorian Fashion, I've decided to look at it from an American point-of-view...and what's more American than Cowboys and Indians?” Researching this collection gave Anna the opportunity to revisit all those great American Movie Westerns like: “Stagecoach” (1939), “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” (1949), “Little Big Man” (1970), and Robert Altman’s “Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull’s History Lesson” (1976). The colors for Spring 2005 are weathered, antiqued, tea-dipped: sand, parchment, buckskin, flax, sunburn, painted desert, sagebrush, bluebell, wild lavender, indigo, bandana red, prairie rose, yellow rose of Texas…
Happy Trails.

| ANNA SUI FALL 2004
|
|
|
The Anna Sui Fall 2004 Collection (shown in New York City on February 11th) was inspired by an exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art about the fashion designer, Elsa Schiaperelli (1890 to 1973) and the underground cult movies of Andy Warhol (from the 1970's).

| ANNA SUI FILM |
|
In the Spring of 2001, Anna Sui threw a party that was filmed
to be used as the backdrop for her Fall 2001 Fashion Show. The
short black-and-white film was directed by Zoe Cassavettes (with
cinematography by Noah Bogen). The scene was meant to evoke the
spirit of Andy Warhol's Pop-period Factory parties. Some of the
party guests were: Vincent Gallo, James Iha, Maggie Rizer, Duncan
Sheik, Carmen Cass, Rufus Wainright, Verushka, Marc Jacobs, Karen
Elson and George Condo.

| SAYOKO AT THE KOBE FASHION MUSEUM, JAPAN |
|
Sayoko Yamaguchi was a top fashion model in the 1970's. The prestigious Kobe Fashion Museum in Japan organized an exhibition in the Spring of 2001 to celebrate her influence. They asked international designers (including: Anna Sui, Christian Lacroix, Issey Miyake, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood) to lend an outfit in the spirit of Sayoko. The museum used the Sayoko mannequin that was designed in 1977 (in fact, Anna Sui owns two of these vintage mannequins and uses them in her New York shop).

| ANNA SUI AT
THE VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM, LONDON |
|
|
In the month of February, 2000 -the Victoria and
Albert Museum featured a small exhibition of Anna Sui's Spring
2000 collection in their Costume Hall. On February 16th, models
paraded around the museum's galleries wearing Anna's "rococo gypsy"
outfits as part of the museum's monthly "Fashion in Motion" series.
(Other designers who have participated in the past: Alexander
McQueen, Vivienne Tam, Christian Lacroix, Philip Treacy) The museum
specializes in decorative arts and its "Fashion in Motion" program
tries to illustrate how the fabled collections serve as an important
resource for designers worldwide. In fact, months earlier, Anna
had visited London and researched eighteenth century costume,
Chinese-export decorative arts, printed Indian cotton textiles
and the work of Marie Antoinette's court painter, Jean-Louis Pillement.
The Victorian and Albert is maybe Anna Sui's favorite museum in
the world. She makes a point to visit it every time she's in London.

| DIANA VREELAND AT THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART, NEW YORK |
 |
In 1992 Anna Sui purchased a life-sized doll in the likeness
of famed fashion editor and costume curator Diana Vreeland (1903-1989)
made by artist Greer Lankton (1958-1996). The doll had originally appeared
in the window of Barney's department store. The doll then lived in Anna's
Chelsea apartment where she periodically changed Diana's outfits to
suit her whims. In 1995, other works of Lankton were featured in the
prestigious Biennial of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Around that
time Anna had started to plan her move to a new apartment and felt Mrs.
Vreeland would be happier and better cared for if she were donated to
the Metropolitan Museum of Art where the real Mrs. Vreeland had spent
17 illustrious years as the maverick curator of their costume collection.
